I'm rather enjoying my life at the moment. It's busy as freakin' hell right now, but it's nearly all in a good way. That's all I'm saying about that in a public post.

So I appear to have lost my beloved Spyderco Solo pocketknife. This makes me incredibly sad.
It was my second one, they were only made for a very short time in the 90's. I lost my previous one in a movie theater where it must've slid out of my pocket in the chair. I went back to look and it was gone. That one had stainless end caps on the handle with an ebony inlay, and a plain blade. My second one which I appear to have just lost last week was stainless all the way along the handle with a half-serrated blade.
There's one on ebay right now, but it's got a textured plastic handle and is just not the same. I loved the solos for how sleek and perfectly shaped they were, and the fugly textured plastic scales just throw the whole thing off. I'll have to keep an eye on the 'bay and see if one pops up with proper scales.

I've been toying with the idea of getting a Leatherman Skeletool, but it's a little large to be a daily carry methinks. In a bag, sure. In my pocket, probably not. I haven't actually handled one yet, so I may change my mind if I can find one in a local store to check out. There was one at EMS the other day but it was blister-packed.

I think I'll get a Gerber Artifact to tide me over, and because it'd be a nice little tool to have easily accessible when I do find a better daily carry knife down the road. Plus it's only $10.

The amazon reviews of the skeletool are somewhat perturbing.

I have a Benchmade Osborne 940 which I used to carry when I was doing theatre tech and cannot in good conscience justify now, since I now use knives that live in racks and not in pockets.

Free to a good home if you'd like it, and you'd be welcome to take it on trial for a few weeks. It's straight edged, and has the black anti-rust coat on the blade.

I'm... flabbergasted at the offer, thanks! Benchmades are some nice blades!
That said, my solo actually turned up today (thanks prosicated!) so I'm happy again with it sitting heavily in the bottom of my pocket.

re skeletool: looks like some new reviews are up since last I checked a few months ago, yeesh. All the earlier reviews were mostly positive, with points dinged for the easy-to-lose-ness of the driver bits, but at that point no one had nearly lost a finger trying to open the pliers.
I still think it may be an excellent tool, but I guess if it's not going to be a daily carry you may as well get a better quality Gerber multi since the only benefit of small and light would be pocketing it.

Friends reunited =)

Benchmades are really nice, which is precisely why I'm sad this one's sitting on my shelf instead of living in a pocket.

Incidentally, I'm a big fan of the Gerber Scout as a general purpose multi, but if you need a multi you can beat on, Victorinox seems the best choice. My farmer friend broke three leathermans, but his Victorinox has lasted him 18 months and counting so far.
