With everyone out there sharing their favorite quote from the O-speach, let me add mine to the mix.
"We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus -- and nonbelievers."

and yet there was still a decidedly Christian prayer in this state ceremony.
ah well. baby steps.

And yes, all the other stuff was lovely to hear as well, but that's the bit I wasn't expecting that made me sit up and take notice.

I agree. I wish they could have found a different term (since non-believers don't believe in ANYTHING), but it's definitely a step. And nice to feel included in the diversity.

agreed, but still.
And Atheist has become a loaded term apparently.

I had the same reaction. I was all excited at first, but then I was like, "wait, why does that sound vaguely like he's mentioning me to suggest to the others that they try and convert me?" But yes, nice to be included. I was thinking that if he'd said "atheists and agnostics" that might not have sounded too bad (ie softened the loaded-ness of "atheists"), but that might've admittedly given a disproportionate amount of weight in the sentence to us nonbelievers.

Interestingly, it occurs to me that this one of the first times I've heard him give a speech where he *didn't* mention gays and lesbians. Huh. I'm not sure what to make of that, if anything.

YES! I whooped and devil-horned the TV in appreciation when he said that. I'd resolved myself to never being represented in the inauguration ceremony. Thanks for the shout-out, Mr P.

Yes. That.

That, and when he said "people who opened their homes when the levees broke," both made me applaud. Others, too, of course, but those stood out.

Oh, and how he refered to our "forebearers" instead of "forefathers," and said "All are created equal," instead of "All men are created equal."

Much, much squeeing, all by myself, over here at UDL.

Now, off to studio.

I noticed that re-wording as well. It seems like a conscious effort to move the language and understanding forward. I know it's not a final step but it sure felt like a step forward, to me.

I was deeply offended by the CLEARLY Christian prayer. Perhaps it's from being raised as a non-Christian and having that kind of thing foisted on me regularly, but it put a damper on my mood.

That said, our President's speech was insightful, thoughtful and well crafted. I have to go with prosicated here though when I say I do wish there had been some sort of stepping down ceremony for the previous administration.
