Apparently the guy in custody for shooting the congresswoman had a youtube channel with a manifesto and so forth on it.

One of the youtube comments struck a bit of a chord for me.
"This guy is an Atheist, and therefore one of your left wing loonies."

Thus, I pose a question.

Are all atheists politically left-wing? (where all == 95%+ or so)

yes
3(16.7%)
no
12(66.7%)
maybe, let me clarify in a comment...
3(16.7%)

Because certainly all the ones that I know are... but then most of the people I know are leftie loonies anyway. ^_^

Do the atheists have a left wing looney requirement somewhere on their application?

I suppose that's the question... innit?
;-)

Wait, I never got an application! What gives?

agreed, based on the religious persons of my acquaintance. This, however is the inverse.
Converse? transverse? I can never keep them straight...

(It's also tongue in cheek.)

I'm guessing that Atheists come in all shapes, sizes, flavors and political leanings. The motivation for their beliefs would probably be what shapes their politics rather than the symptom of Atheism.

I'm pretty much with you, wherein I mostly only know leftie-loonies (or at least, mostly only have conversations with LLs) so I can't give any first hand accounts of people I know who are the opposite.

But I would imagine a heavy over-lap of libertarians and atheists. In fact it's kind of hard to imagine a hard-core libertarian with any spirituality.

The main question fails to separate fiscal conservatives (which many libertarians are) from social conservatives (which many atheists aren't.) Within the spectrum, libertarians straddle some of the social conservative lines w/r/t guns, degrees of gov't influence 'allowed', responsibilities of private organizations, and religion.

Well, there are very right-wing groups that want many of the same ouctomes (ie, for the government to stay the hell out of their business) as libertarians, right? But I agree that the fiscal- and intervention-conservative libertarians are quite likely to be atheist.

I'd be surprised if, in the US, you could find very many socially conservative atheists; I'm can't think of any narratives behind social conservativism that aren't backed up by God offhand, at least. Fortunately, every faith I know of also has beautiful religiously-based progressive narratives.

Well, you know me. Perhaps not so "hard core" as to be fanatic, but certainly libertarian.

Considering how many right-wing loonies cynically use God to manipulate the masses, I'd say a lot of them are non-believers.

Hey, keep in mind that for most of the time you have known me I was a superatheist.

So, there's that.

...I'd say that he leans toward left-wing loony more because "The Communist Manifesto" is one of his favorite books, but really I think he's more of a general loony.

This. I think it's a big disservice to the whole world gestalt to try to pin down if he's a Liberal or Conservative loony. Let's go with the whole "dude shot into a crowd containing kids = Loony" thing.
